2012 Governing Board Election

The OpenJDK Governing Board manages the structure and operation of the OpenJDK Community. It has two At-Large Members who serve for a term of one calendar year.

Nominations for the 2012 term were due by 16:00 UTC on Thursday, 15 March 2012.

During this time any OpenJDK Member could nominate an individual who did not currently hold an appointed Governing Board seat to fill one of the At-Large seats. That individual need not already have been an OpenJDK Member. An OpenJDK Member could make more than one such nomination.

Candidates

Two individuals were nominated, and each accepted his nomination. The candidates' own statements were as follows:

OpenJDK GB meetings can seem distant from the day-to-day work of writing code; sometimes discussions are so abstract that it's hard for a working programmer to tell what's being discussed. My role is to stand up for freedom and to steer the GB towards helping people who crank out code to get their job done. In its first year the GB has mostly done the Right Thing, and in particular I'd point to the Reference Implementation of JDK 7 being entirely GPL'd. We need more of that spirit of openness and freedom, and I want to keep the GB moving in that direction.

I hope to continue my role as an advocate for continuing improvements in OpenJDK processes and mechanisms, especially as they impact the academic, research, and individual contributor communities.

Results

Voting started at 20:00 UTC on Monday, 19 March, and ran for two weeks, ending at 20:00 UTC on Monday, 2 April. Secret ballots were used, at the Governing Board's direction.

There were two candidates for two open seats, so per the OpenJDK Community Bylaws this was a ratification election: Each nominee needed to be approved by a Simple Majority of those Members who voted.
