OpenJDK Governing Board Minutes: 2025/02/27

The OpenJDK Governing Board met via conference call on Thursday, 27 February 2025 at 16:00 UTC with no initial agenda.

Five Board members were present: Georges Saab, Annette Keenleyside, Andrew Haley, Phil Race, and Mark Reinhold.

The intent of these minutes is to capture the conversational flow of the Board's discussion and also to record decisions. If you are interested only in the latter then search for the word "AGREED" throughout the text.

0. Agenda?

After confirming that the meeting was quorate, Georges requested agenda items. None were suggested. The Board was reminded that nominations are currently being solicited for the 2025 Governing Board Election. So far, there are three candidates, and everyone agrees they are well-qualified.

1. Conferences

Georges reminded everyone about the upcoming JavaOne conference (18 - 20 March in Redwood Shores, CA) and encouraged attendance. He noted that conferences in the US appear to be slower than those in Europe. Georges said FOSDEM (Brussels, Feb 2025) and Jfokus (Stockholm, Feb 2025) were fun.

Mark said that the one-day OpenJDK Committers' Workshop (OCW) in Brussels right after FOSDEM was productive. In answer to Annette's question about who was invited, Mark replied that all Committers are invited; non-Committers are welcome to apply, and are accepted if space is available. Andrew noted that the room was at capacity.

Mark suggested that future OCWs might only be held in Europe, adjacent to FOSDEM in February. Georges said that he thinks that the OCW in Santa Clara, California in August, adjacent to the JVM Language Summit (JVM LS), suffers because people are just too tired to actively participate right after JVM LS.

Phil observed that many of the August 2024 attendees were from Europe, so there was already an overlap between the Santa Clara and Brussels OCWs. It was believed that Europe and the western US are approximately the same distance from Asia, so Asian attendees would not face significant travel burdens to reach Europe. When asked whether there are plans to hold JVM LS in the summer of 2025, Mark replied that there has not yet been an announcement but that he expected the conference to be held in Santa Clara as usual.

After soliciting one last time for agenda items and receiving none, Georges thanked everyone for attending them and wished them a good day/week/month.

At this point, the Board adjourned.
