OpenJDK Governing Board Minutes: 2024/11/07
The OpenJDK Governing Board met via conference call on Thursday, 7 November 2024 at 16:00 UTC with the following agenda:
- Generative AI and OpenJDK Contributions
- Any other business
Five Board members were present: Georges Saab, Annette Keenleyside, Andrew Haley, Phil Race, and Mark Reinhold.
The intent of these minutes is to capture the conversational flow of the Board's discussion and also to record decisions. If you are interested only in the latter then search for the word "AGREED" throughout the text.
1. Generative AI and OpenJDK Contributions
Georges started the meeting by declaring it quorate and asked for additional agenda items. When none were provided, the description of the first topic was read:
What is the OpenJDK Community's policy concerning accepting contributions from code assistants or is there a plan to formulate one?
Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, and its potential legal implications, the Board agreed that this discussion should be off the record.
The Board recommended that, once a policy is formulated, it should be communicated broadly.
2. Any other business
Andrew requested the status of the OpenJDK Committers' Workshop (OCW) in Brussels in February 2025. Mark mentioned he anticipated similar arrangements to those in February 2024. Georges hoped for improvements in food and transportation. Andrew suggested pre-seeding topics for discussion, but Mark reminded him that pre-seeding topics at at earlier OCWs had not been successful.
At this point, the Board adjourned.
