OpenJDK Governing Board Minutes: 2023/04/27
The OpenJDK Governing Board met via conference call on Thursday, 27 April 2023 at 15:00 UTC with the following agenda:
- Thank you and welcome
- Bob Lee
- JVMLS and OCW in 2023
- Any other business
Five Board members were present: Georges Saab, Annette Keenleyside, Andrew Haley, Phil Race, and Mark Reinhold.
The intent of these minutes is to capture the conversational flow of the Board's discussion and also to record decisions. If you are interested only in the latter then search for the word "AGREED" throughout the text.
1. Thank you and welcome
Georges started the meeting by thanking their guest, Volker Simonis, for attending for the meeting's first agenda item. On behalf of the Board, Georges thanked Volker for doing an admirable job of representing the OpenJDK Community over the past year. Volker thanked Georges for the kind words and congratulated Phil and Andrew. After accepting the Board's appreciation and wishing the Board a fun year, Volker left the meeting.
Georges welcomed Phil to the Board. Georges briefly described the purpose of the Board saying that while the Bylaws were designed to avoid conflicts, the Board existed to resolve issues when they did arise and ensure the smooth operation of the OpenJDK Community. The Board is not a technical body. He viewed the Board's minimal engagement today as evidence that the effort to establish the Bylaws and to support infrastructure was a good investment. Andrew agreed with Georges' summary and added that additional evidence of a successful Board was a successful JDK. During Annette's welcome, she reflected on her first year noting that learning what was and was not under the Board's purview was a good learning activity.
Phil thanked everyone, stating that he hoped to be a good representative of the entire OpenJDK Community. Georges reiterated that while Phil and Andrew both have company affiliations, the role of an At-Large Member was to represent the entire Community.
2. Bob Lee
Georges' next topic was the recent tragic death of Bob Lee. He noted that Bob was a fantastic person who contributed to the success of Java in many ways which included working on popular APIs and bringing people together. While Bob did not work directly in OpenJDK, he shepherded companies he worked for to join and contribute. Georges suggested the Board recognize Bob and his contributions with a minute of silence. After several members expressed their shock and support for the tribute, the minute was observed.
3. JVMLS and OCW in 2023
Georges was happy to announce that the JVM Language Summit and OpenJDK Committers' Workshop would be held the week of 7 August 2023 after a three year hiatus. Phil and Andrew both expressed excitement at the prospect of seeing many colleagues there.
4. Any other business
There were no responses when Georges solicited for agenda items one last time.
At this point, the Board adjourned.
